I did an analysis of a TV series 'waking the dead' i was analysing the shots, sound, diagetic and non diagetic music and how these created tension, this will apply to the opening of my thriller so it was good for extra research.
Write an analysis of the opening sequence of waking the dead.
Having seen the first few scenes of this episode of waking the dead, I am now able to analyse the shots, lighting and music and the effect these have on the audience.
The first scene opens with an extreme close up of a chain, the lighting is low key which sets a scary feel to the film and also straight away makes you question what’s going to happen. It then zooms out of the extreme close up to a medium shot where you find out that the chain is actually a swing, you here the creaky sound of the chain moving back and forth and there is non diagetic music in the background that just builds up tension for the audience to make you want to watch.
The scene then switches to a medium shot of a women sitting in what looks like a lab, you can guess this by the colour white which is emphasised all around the mise en scene. She is wearing a white lab coat and is looking at what looks like items left at a scene of a crime, as they are in closed clear bags. The non diagtic music is carried on throughout the first scene, this creates a scary mood and continues to give you the feeling that you want to watch what is happening. It then cuts back to the swing creaking where there is a medium shot of a man on the swing looking down, he looks like he is thinking, at this point the audience tries to put all this evidence together to figure out what is happening. It continues to flick from both these scenes with the same music, each time you witness a little more of each set and learn more about each, they use a combination of extreme close ups to long shots and also use medium shots frequently.
It then switches to a medium shot of a man in a cab, this is a little confusing as they are giving the audience loads of information all at once that doesnt fit together the music stays the same but you can also hear the sounds from outside. It is still dark in every scene except when inside the lab where the lighting is dim. It then switches back to the man on the swing, to an extreme close up of a foot on a football rolling back and forth. This also confuses you because you have no idea who’s foot it is until you watch the rest of the scene.
It then goes to two women in an office/ lab, this is where there is a first dialogue of the two women chatting, they don’t give too much away, but you can guess by the set that they are in lab and trying to solve a murder/crime. The creepy music carries on throughout this scene also. After this it switches to what looks like a murder, as it all happens so quick and you just hear pain and voices seeking help. It isnt very clear until you see some blood, as the shots switch from the lab to the murder, but after you can clearly see that someone just killed someone else. When watching this combination of shots, it is very effective as you not too sure what is hapening and in the lab they are discussing a murder that has already happened and then you can see another one whilst the talk about the previous one. Also its effective as they have used different shots to be graphic and detailed like close ups and extreme close ups.
The music is still creepy and seems to pick up as the murder is happening. There is then a shot of a maid who looks into the key hole of what looks like a hotel room and she then walks into the room. After the murder there is a shot of a man on the phone the creepy music stops and is replaced with everyday office noise, and his voice over. This Is a tilting shot of the man on the phone and ends up tightening into a close up, this is effective as you can see his expression on his face, so this helps you empathise him. It then cuts to two men who look like some sort of investigators looking at the victim, where there is a bit of humour, which is confusing as there was just a serious murder and then switches to humour but it is effective. The scene then moves on to a long corridor where there are loads of investigators
